An Acceptable Technology Use Policy (AUP) is a description of what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable use of the Internet. An AUP is a form for teachers, parents and students to sign, indicating that they agree to abide by the AUP.

AUPs in schools should be designed to:
- Educate the parents about their children's use of the Internet
- Educate student about their risk of the Internet
- Educate students about inappropriate and appropriate use of the Internet
- Encourage ethical behavior and discourage criminal behavior
- Encourage integrity and honesty
- Encourage respect for others and their private property
- Protect the school networking equipment and software from danger
